The Ultimate French Bread Pizza – Crispy, Cheesy, and Ready in Minutes!
When you’re craving pizzeria-style pizza but don’t want the hassle of making dough, Ultimate French Bread Pizza is the perfect solution! It’s crispy, cheesy, and ridiculously easy—ready in just 20 minutes. Whether it’s a quick weeknight dinner, game-day snack, or late-night craving, this recipe has you covered. Plus, you can customize it with all your favorite toppings!
Believe it or not, French Bread Pizza became a household favorite thanks to food innovator Bob Petrillose. In the 1960s, he created a version called Poor Man’s Pizza, making it a quick, budget-friendly alternative to traditional pies. Since then, it’s taken on a life of its own, popping up in kitchens everywhere!
Even better, this version guarantees a perfectly crisp crust by pre-toasting the bread—no sogginess here! With bold flavors, gooey cheese, and endless topping possibilities, it’s a go-to recipe you’ll make again and again. So, why wait? Grab a loaf of French bread and let’s make the best homemade pizza ever!

Recipe Yield: 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
1 large loaf French bread (12 inches)
1 1/4 cup pizza sauce
2 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese
half cup pepperoni slices (or preferred toppings)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
Fresh basil (for garnish)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat the oven: Set to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Prep the bread: Slice French bread in half lengthwise, then cut each half into two pieces, making 4 portions. (For larger slices, keep as two halves instead and remove some of the inside bread slightly to allow more cheese and toppings.) Place on the baking sheet, cut side up.
3. Crisp the crust: Brush each piece lightly with olive oil, then sprinkle with garlic powder, oregano, and salt for flavor. Toast in the oven for 5 minutes—this keeps the bread from getting soggy.
4. Sauce it up: Spread pizza sauce evenly over each toasted bread slice.
5. Cheese & toppings:
- Sprinkle half the mozzarella over the sauce.
- Add pepperoni and any other toppings.
- Top with the remaining mozzarella and parmesan for that gooey, melty finish.
6. Bake to perfection: Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
7. Garnish & serve: Sprinkle with fresh basil, slice, and serve hot. Enjoy with extra pizza sauce for dipping!
HELPFUL TIPS TO PERFECT THIS RECIPE
- Crispier, bakery-style crust: Pre-toast the bread before adding sauce and toppings—it prevents sogginess!
- Extra rich flavor: Use garlic butter instead of olive oil for a more indulgent taste.
- Best cheese blend: A mix of mozzarella + parmesan gives the perfect balance of melty and sharp flavor.
