Spicy Garlic Butter Shrimp Pasta is the kind of dish that feels indulgent, comforting, and exciting all at once. Tender shrimp are gently sautéed in garlic butter, then tossed with silky pasta and a subtle kick of heat that builds without overwhelming. Because the sauce clings beautifully to every strand, each bite feels rich yet balanced.

Meanwhile, the garlic slowly blooms in butter, creating deep flavor before the shrimp even hit the pan. As everything comes together, the pasta absorbs the savory sauce, while a splash of reserved pasta water ensures a glossy finish. Although this recipe feels restaurant-worthy, it’s surprisingly simple and approachable for home cooks.

Interestingly, shrimp pasta dishes became especially popular in coastal Italian-American kitchens, where seafood was paired with butter or olive oil instead of heavy sauces. Over time, cooks added spice and garlic to elevate the flavor. Today, this modern version keeps that spirit alive while adding bold warmth and elegance.

Whether served for a cozy dinner or a casual gathering, this pasta always impresses with minimal effort.

Recipe Yield: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

12 oz spaghetti
1 lb shrimp (medium to large), peeled and deveined
¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
4 Tbsp unsalted butter
3 Tbsp olive oil
5 cloves garlic, finely minced
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
¾ tsp kosher salt
½ tsp black pepper
2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
½ cup reserved pasta water

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook the pasta:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, add spaghetti and cook until al dente. Reserve ½ cup pasta water, then drain and set aside.

2. Season the shrimp:
Pat shrimp dry. Next, season evenly with salt and black pepper.

3. Sauté the shrimp:
Heat olive oil and 1 Tbsp butter in a wide skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add shrimp in a single layer. Cook 1–2 minutes per side, until pink, opaque, and just cooked through (145°F). Remove and set aside.

4. Build the garlic butter sauce:
Reduce heat to medium-low. Add remaining butter and garlic. Stir constantly until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Then add red pepper flakes.

5. Combine everything:
Add cooked pasta to the skillet, followed by reserved pasta water. Toss gently until glossy. Return shrimp to the pan.

6. Finish and serve:
Stir in Parmesan, lemon juice, and parsley. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve immediately.

Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe

  • Control the heat: If you prefer milder spice, reduce red pepper flakes slightly; however, keeping some heat enhances the garlic butter flavor.
  • Don’t overcook shrimp: Because shrimp cook quickly, removing them early ensures they stay juicy when returned to the sauce.
  • Use pasta water wisely: Adding it gradually helps emulsify the sauce, making it silky instead of greasy.
