There’s something incredibly comforting about this Creamy Cucumber Tomato Salad—it’s a classic side dish that tastes like summer in every bite. Made with just a few fresh ingredients, it’s the kind of easy recipe that instantly transports you to backyard picnics, Sunday dinners, and those simple, feel-good meals we all crave. In fact, every time I make this salad, I’m reminded of long, sun-drenched afternoons spent on my grandparents’ farm—where crisp cucumbers and juicy tomatoes came straight from the garden and fresh dill perfumed the air.
Although this salad is beloved across the U.S. today, it has roots in Eastern European home cooking, where sour cream-based vegetable salads are traditional staples. Over the years, this creamy version made its way into American kitchens and hearts—especially in summertime when produce is at its peak.
So whether you’re planning a cookout, prepping a quick lunch, or just craving something cool and satisfying, this simple but flavor-packed salad is one you’ll turn to again and again.

Recipe Yield: 4–6 servings
INGREDIENTS
5 salad cucumbers, peeled
3 tomatoes on the vine
1/2 onion, medium
2 1/2 tbsp dill, fresh, chopped
4 tbsp sour cream
1 tsp red wine vinegar, organic
salt, ground black pepper to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prep the produce: First, wash all the vegetables and dill thoroughly. You want everything fresh and clean to build flavor.
2. Slice it up: Next, thinly slice the cucumbers, tomatoes, and onion. Add them all to a large salad bowl.
3. Make the creamy dressing: In a separate mixing bowl, combine chopped dill, sour cream, red wine vinegar, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth and creamy.
4. Toss and chill: Pour the dressing over the sliced veggies and mix gently until everything is well coated. Let the salad chill in the fridge for 10–15 minutes before serving.
Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe
- Use Garden-Fresh Veggies: The fresher the cucumbers and tomatoes, the more vibrant the salad. Farmers market finds or garden-picked are ideal.
- Don’t Skip the Vinegar: That little splash of red wine vinegar brightens up the whole salad and balances the creaminess.
- Let It Chill: A short chill in the fridge not only helps the flavors come together but makes this salad extra refreshing, especially on warm days.

I don’t have fresh dill only dry will that work? Also i dont have red wine vinegar only white wine vinegar
Thank you for your question, Jasmyne! You can substitute red wine vinegar with white but you must use fresh dill in this recipe (dry won’t work).
This is a delightful recipe. I substitute Greek yoghurt as we are on Weight Watchers.
Thank you 🙂
