Healthy Peanut Butter Cups pair a crisp semisweet chocolate shell with a creamy, lightly maple-sweetened center. They feel indulgent, yet the filling is made with natural peanut butter, almond flour, and a few simple pantry ingredients.
The center is soft and truffle-like rather than runny, so every cup holds together beautifully. Meanwhile, vanilla, a tiny pinch of cinnamon, and flaky sea salt round out the chocolate-peanut butter flavor without making it overly sweet. Best of all, the recipe needs no oven or special candy equipment.
These homemade peanut butter cups are easy to prepare ahead and keep well in the refrigerator or freezer. Serve one with coffee, tuck a few into lunchboxes, or keep a chilled batch ready for afternoon cravings. A short rest at room temperature gives the chocolate a clean bite and the center its best creamy consistency.

Recipe Yield: 12 cups
INGREDIENTS
1 3/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
1/2 cup creamy natural peanut butter, well stirred
2 tsp refined coconut oil, divided
3 tbsp fine almond flour
2 tbsp pure maple syrup
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp flaky sea salt, for topping (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare the pan:
Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with paper or silicone liners.
2. Make the chocolate bases:
Melt 3/4 cup chocolate chips with 1 tsp coconut oil in 20-second intervals, stirring after each. Spoon about 1 tbsp into each liner, spreading it across the bottom and slightly up the sides. Freeze for 10 minutes.
3. Mix the peanut butter filling:
Meanwhile, stir the peanut butter, almond flour, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and kosher salt until thick and smooth. Let stand for 2 minutes, then divide into 12 portions and flatten each into a disc slightly smaller than the liners.
4. Fill the cups:
Place one peanut butter disc in each chilled chocolate base, leaving a narrow border around the edges.
5. Seal with chocolate:
Melt the remaining 1 cup chocolate chips with the remaining 1 tsp coconut oil. Spoon it over the filling, guiding the chocolate to the edges. Gently tap the pan to level the tops, then sprinkle with flaky sea salt, if desired.
6. Chill and serve:
Refrigerate for 30–40 minutes or freeze for 15 minutes, until completely firm. Let the cups stand at room temperature for 5 minutes before serving.
Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe
- Stir the peanut butter thoroughly. Natural peanut butter must be completely blended before measuring. Otherwise, excess surface oil can make the filling too soft.
- Keep the filling inside the chocolate border. Make each peanut butter disc slightly smaller than the cup. This allows the top chocolate to meet the base and fully seal the center.
- Adjust only when necessary. Peanut butter consistency varies by brand. If the filling remains too sticky to shape after resting, stir in 1 additional tsp almond flour.
- Use refined coconut oil for neutral flavor. It helps the chocolate spread smoothly without adding a noticeable coconut taste.
- Make mini peanut butter cups: For smaller treats, use a 24-cup mini muffin pan with mini liners and divide the ingredients evenly. Follow the same layering method, then chill until firm. The smaller cups will set a little faster.
- Store the cups chilled. Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Let frozen cups soften for about 10 minutes before eating.
