Recipe Yield: 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

1 lb ziti pasta
3 cups marinara sauce
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
½ cup grated parmesan cheese
1 large egg
2 tbsp olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried oregano
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped (plus more for garnish)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook the pasta:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook ziti until al dente, about 9 minutes. Drain and set aside.

2. Sauté the garlic:
In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in marinara sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.

3. Make the cheese mixture:
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta, egg, half of the parmesan, salt, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.

4. Layer the ziti:
Spread a thin layer of sauce in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Add half the pasta, spoon over half the ricotta mixture, sprinkle with mozzarella, then repeat with remaining pasta, ricotta, sauce, and mozzarella.

5. Bake the ziti:
Top with the remaining parmesan. Cover with foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until golden and bubbly.

6. Serve and garnish:
Let rest 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil.

Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe

  • Use high-quality cheese: Freshly shredded mozzarella and parmesan melt creamier and give the ziti a luxurious, cheesy finish.
  • Don’t overcook pasta: Stop cooking when slightly firm since it continues softening in the oven, ensuring the perfect bite.
  • Make it ahead: Assemble the ziti a day in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Simply bake when ready for an easy weeknight dinner.
