Apple Pie Salsa

Apple Pie Salsa with cinnamon-spiced diced apples and a cinnamon sugar tortilla chip.
Apple Pie Salsa brings warm cinnamon-spiced apples and crisp cinnamon sugar chips together in a fun, scoopable dessert.

Apple Pie Salsa turns warm apple pie filling into a scoopable dessert that feels cozy, playful, and a little unexpected. Two kinds of apples create the right balance. Honeycrisp apples add juicy sweetness, while Granny Smith apples bring a bright, tart bite and hold their shape beautifully.

The apples simmer briefly in nutty browned butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, lemon, and vanilla. As a result, every spoonful tastes rich and warmly spiced without becoming overly sweet. A light cornstarch finish creates a glossy sauce that clings to the tender apple pieces.

Serve this dessert salsa warm with crisp homemade cinnamon sugar tortilla chips. It lands somewhere between apple pie, dessert nachos, and an easy party treat. It also thickens nicely as it rests, making it perfect for gatherings, afternoon snacks, or relaxed dessert boards. A little vanilla ice cream alongside would be wonderful too.

Recipe Yield: 8 servings

INGREDIENTS

Apple Pie Salsa
2 medium Honeycrisp apples, cored and diced into 1/3-inch pieces (peeled, if preferred)
2 medium Granny Smith apples, cored and diced into 1/3-inch pieces (peeled, if preferred)
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 tbsp pure maple syrup
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp water
1 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp fine sea salt
1 1/2 tsp cornstarch
1 tbsp cold water
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest

Cinnamon Sugar Chips
6 medium flour tortillas, 8-inch
3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of fine sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare the cinnamon sugar:
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Then, combine the sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl.

2. Bake the tortilla chips:
Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges. Arrange them in a single layer, brush both sides lightly with melted butter, and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake for 9–12 minutes, flipping the chips and rotating the pans halfway through, until crisp and lightly golden. Begin checking at 9 minutes, then cool completely on the pans.

3. Brown the butter:
Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook for 2–3 minutes, swirling often, until golden flecks appear and the butter smells nutty. Immediately add the apples to prevent the butter from burning.

4. Cook the apples:
Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, lemon juice, 2 tbsp water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.

5. Thicken the salsa:
Whisk the cornstarch with 1 tbsp cold water until completely smooth. Stir it into the apples and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the sauce becomes glossy and lightly thickened.

6. Finish and serve:
Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the vanilla and lemon zest. Let the salsa rest for 10 minutes, then serve warm or at room temperature with the cinnamon sugar chips.

Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe

  • Keep the apple pieces evenly sized. Small, uniform pieces cook at the same rate and make the Apple Pie Salsa easier to scoop with the tortilla chips.
  • Stop cooking while the apples have a gentle bite. They continue softening in the warm sauce, so fully tender apples in the skillet may become too soft while resting.
  • Watch the butter closely. Once golden flecks appear, add the apples right away. Brown butter can change from nutty to burned quickly.
  • Allow both components to rest. The apple sauce thickens during its 10-minute rest, while the tortilla chips become crisper as they cool.
  • Store the chips separately. Refrigerate leftover salsa for up to 4 days. Keep the cinnamon sugar chips in an airtight container at room temperature to preserve their crunch.
