Pumpkin Spice Latte

Pumpkin Spice Latte topped with whipped cream and a light dusting of cinnamon.
Pumpkin Spice Latte blends real pumpkin, warm spices, maple syrup, and bold coffee beneath a soft whipped cream finish.

Pumpkin Spice Latte brings comforting fall flavor into your kitchen with almost no effort. This homemade version blends real pumpkin purée, warm pumpkin pie spice, maple syrup, strong coffee, and creamy milk into a smooth, cozy drink. It’s easy to adjust, too—add a little more maple for sweetness or extra foam for a coffeehouse-style finish.

Pumpkin pie spice has been part of American kitchens for generations. Packaged blends began appearing in grocery stores in the 1930s, making those familiar warming spices easier to use in seasonal baking. Decades later, those same flavors became closely linked with fall coffee drinks.

Finished with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon, this latte feels special without being fussy. Serve it on a cool morning, with a weekend breakfast, or whenever a warm coffee break sounds especially good.

Recipe Yield: 2 servings

INGREDIENTS

1 cup whole milk
1 cup strong brewed coffee (or ½ cup espresso + ½ cup hot water)
3 tbsp pumpkin purée
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
½ tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp heavy cream
Whipped cream, for topping
Pinch ground cinnamon, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Warm the base:
In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk milk, heavy cream, pumpkin purée, maple syrup, and pumpkin pie spice until hot but not boiling.

2. Froth and flavor:
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Froth with a handheld frother or whisk vigorously for 20–30 seconds until lightly foamy.

3. Add the coffee:
Pour brewed coffee or espresso mixture into two mugs. Divide the pumpkin milk mixture evenly over the coffee.

4. Finish and serve:
Top with whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon. Serve immediately while warm and cozy.

Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe

  • Use Real Pumpkin Purée: Use plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling. Gently heating it with the milk and spices helps the flavor mellow and blend smoothly into the latte.
  • Whisk for Easy Foam: A handheld frother creates the easiest foam, but vigorous whisking works well too. Froth the mixture immediately after removing it from the heat.
  • Brew Strong Coffee: A bold brew keeps the coffee flavor noticeable alongside the pumpkin, maple syrup, and warm spices for a more balanced latte.
