Chocolate Cherry Muffins

Chocolate Cherry Muffins combine deep cocoa flavor, juicy cherries, and pockets of melted chocolate in a bakery-style muffin that feels special but easy to bake.

Chocolate Cherry Muffins bring together deep cocoa flavor, juicy cherries, and pockets of melted semisweet chocolate in a tall, bakery-style muffin. The batter uses sour cream and buttermilk for a tender crumb that stays moist without feeling heavy, while a hot oven start helps the tops rise high and crack naturally. Fresh cherries are wonderful in summer, but frozen cherries work beautifully too, making these easy to bake year-round.

The combination feels a little special without making the recipe fussy. Each muffin is rich enough for dessert, yet still right at home with coffee or tea. A few cherry pieces and chocolate chips on top give every muffin an inviting finish and make the flavor obvious before the first bite. Best of all, the batter comes together in two bowls with no mixer needed.

Recipe Yield: 12 muffins

INGREDIENTS

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups pitted cherries, quartered and divided
2/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips, divided
2 large eggs, room temperature
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup sour cream, room temperature
1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp kosher salt
1/2 cup neutral oil
2 tsp vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare the oven:
Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners.

2. Combine the dry ingredients:
Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.

3. Mix the wet ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk eggs, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth. Then whisk in oil, sour cream, buttermilk, and vanilla.

4. Make the batter:
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and fold gently until almost combined. Fold in 1 1/4 cups cherries and 1/2 cup chocolate chips just until no dry streaks remain.

5. Fill the muffin cups:
Divide batter evenly among the muffin cups, filling them nearly to the top. Scatter the remaining cherries and chocolate chips over each muffin.

6. Bake the muffins:
Bake for 5 minutes at 425°F. Without opening the oven, reduce temperature to 375°F and bake for another 14–17 minutes, until the tops spring back lightly and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs, or the center registers 200–205°F on an instant-read thermometer.

7. Cool and serve:
Cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer the muffins to a wire rack and let cool slightly before serving.

HELPFUL TIPS TO PERFECT THIS RECIPE

  • Keep the cherries from adding too much moisture: Pat fresh cherries dry after pitting and cutting. If using frozen cherries, add them straight from frozen rather than thawing first.
  • Mix only until combined: Once the flour goes in, fold the batter gently. A few small lumps are perfectly fine and help keep Chocolate Cherry Muffins tender rather than dense.
  • Use the high-heat start: Those first 5 minutes at 425°F encourage a taller, beautifully domed muffin top. Reduce the temperature without opening the oven so the muffins keep their lift.
  • Know when they are done: Test through a chocolate-free section near the center. Moist crumbs are ideal; wet batter means they need another minute or two.
